Refund of semester fee – how it works

Are you taking a semester off, do you have a disability card with token or are you in another special situation? Then, under certain conditions, you can get a refund from us for a part of your semester fees (e.g. the part of the Studentenwerk).

A refund is possible in the following cases:

• Leave of absence
• A stay abroad (you can provide proof of a semester abroad or an internship abroad for the entire semester)
• disabled ID card with valid stamp
• Double enrolment when transitioning from a bachelor’s to a master’s degree

NEW as of the winter semester 2026/27: Applications for a refund of the semester fee due to withdrawal will no longer be processed by Studentenwerk Magdeburg at any of the institutions (Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, Harz University of Applied Sciences, Otto von Guericke University). If the withdrawal application is submitted on time, the refund will be processed automatically by the respective institution. The deadlines set by each institution apply.

Important: There are fixed deadlines for applications – these can be found in the current contribution regulations (“Beitragsordnung”). Submit the application form to Studentenwerk Magdeburg (Student Services Department) by the deadline. Required evidence can usually be submitted after the deadline.
