Specific problems that can cause a disability or chronic illness are the topics of consultations and discussions provided by the consultant as a contact person to the affected students with disabilities and chronically ill students.
It often becomes clear during the initial telephone or email inquiries that the disabled have insufficient or no information at all about the compensation for disadvantages at exams, internships, etc. Sometimes it is too late to lock the stable door after the horse had bolted before a chronically ill person finds the courage to come out.

Time and again confusion in entitlements to attendance allowance or aid become obvious and there is also a need for more information about the opportunities of integration assistance at social services and labour office. Also, a more difficult course of study can be invoked in case of study financing, hence with BAföG and possibly with social welfare assistance or foundations.

Each case is unique, and individual counselling is possible and often promising. The affected students can also find important information on the topic in the “Study and Disability” handbook published by the Study and Disability Information Centre of the Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW).
