Demokratie benötigt einen freien Diskurs. Gerade amerikanische Social-Media-Unternehmen lassen jedoch Profit-Algorithmen bestimmen, welche Informationen ihre Nutzer*innen erreichen. So kommt nur ein Bruchteil der Fakten und Meinungen in der Gesellschaft an. Besonders für den Klimaschutz ist das seit Langem problematisch: Kontroverse Themen werden von den Algorithmen gepusht, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse gehen unter und das Ergebnis sind Hetze und Desinformation.

Democracy requires free discourse. American social media companies, in particular, allow profit-driven algorithms to determine what information reaches their users. As a result, only a fraction of the facts and opinions make their way into the public sphere. This has long been a problem, especially when it comes to climate protection: controversial topics are amplified by the algorithms, scientific findings are overlooked, and the result is hate speech and disinformation.
